Webtoon Wednesday: Let’s Play by Mongié

Published Nov. 6, 2017

Sam wants to be a game developer, but before her career can get started, a popular gaming personality posts a video of himself playing her first game and gives it a bad review.

To make matters worse, she soon finds out he’s her new neighbor!

A story about gaming, memes, and social anxiety. Come for the plot, stay for the doggo.- Webtoons

I kept putting this comic on the back burner. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to read this because although the video game aspect is not only near to my personal life and although it provides a creative theme, I didn’t want to get into the romance aspect of it. Because being honest, it comes off a bit cliche.

But I adore this read. I love the idea that the comic centralizes around video games and what can happen when a popular reviewer gives a bad review. I love how real Sam is. Between the bull crap she goes through at her work, her game, her interactions with her friends and even the blindness to those interested in her. I liked her a lot.

But my favorite part of this is how the author talks about what can happen when you receive a bad review from a popular reviewer. Bad reviews happen and they should happen not everything is good. But what the author touched upon is when you review something and have no idea what it is about or what is going on. Reviews like that suck and although they may not be as hurtful as a bad review from someone who knows exactly what it is happening, it is frustrating, rude and disappointing. Taking a look at this other side adds a lot of intrigue to this comic.

The series is still new and it hasn’t taken too much of a dive into the romance and I am okay with that. I want there to be a build up to actual feelings and getting to know each other as opposed to insta-love. I want to see Sam break out of her shell.

One thing I don’t want to see even though it is already there is a love-triangle. I am hoping that the author doesn’t go to deep into that clutch because it will stall the plot. What I am hoping for is more about gaming and creating games. The author is doing a really good job with that aspect and I hope it keeps going.

As a on going series, I look forward to reading this and of course when season one is complete, an update to this review will be added.

Webtoons Wednesday: DICE (Season 1) by Hyunseok Yun

Published June 30, 2014

What if you can restart your life with a different setting just like a game? DONG TAE always get bullied by his classmates, but TAE BIN, sits right next to him, is handsome and popular at school; and now, TAE BIN suggests DONG TAE to play a little game.- Webtoons

This was good. Like really good and I am very happy it is still an on going series.

First and foremost, Dong Tae is a tool. I didn’t like him before the Dice and after the Dice and that is just personal. However, he keeps the story going and is perfect for this world and environment.

You can look at this comic like entering a video game because it is slightly based off that. Dong Tae’s environment doesn’t change but he is able to “level up” in real life by completing quests. As a semi-gamer, I loved this idea and the creativity the author puts into this.

However, when you first initially begin the story, you think that it will be creepy but it really isn’t. The story moves pretty fast and goes pretty deep with good, evil and of course the abuse of power. I do appreciate the growth of Dong Tae throughout the storyline. He doesn’t realize what he bargained for but at the end of the day he goes through a battle of what is right and wrong within himself. He redeems himself a bit but it took a while for me to enjoy his presence.

What I didn’t like about this was the love triangle or actually the motive for why Dong Tae does what he does. Getting bullied sucks.. alot but why Dong Tae decides he want to change or go through with the Dice is bull and I kind of wanted more from that intent.

Other than that artwork is amazing and in full color. There are a bunch of Easter eggs in it as well and the author proves not everything has to be so serious. I was surprised with how much I liked this comic. I was expecting the usual character enters the game world, either decides to fight to go back to real life or decides to stick around. This is not that.

Webtoon Wednesday: My Dear Cold-Blooded King by LifeLight

Published March 12, 2017 On Going Series

Born a humble peasant, Kihara Mei has lived simply day by day as a merchant in the capitol, and never assumed things would change. But, one fateful day would change the course of her b7 life, when faced with a deadly challenge against dangerous royal assassins. Now, with the eyes of the dreaded Blood King upon her, her life of simplicity would now become a tangled web of secrecy, deceit, and desire.- Goodreads

I’m a sucker for romantic historical fiction. Done well, you will have a fan for life. My Dear Cold Blooded King is a on going series and it is done pretty well. Kihara isn’t a naive woman, who is unable to defend or speak for herself. The woman is badass to a certain extent. She doesn’t really think things through and is emotional  and makes fast decisions without real consideration of herself and others. But despite this, she is a strong character even when she is unsure of her feelings.

Before you ask, yes, there is a love triangle. At first, I didn’t think the author was going to go that way but yeah it happened and I can’t even say I am really mad about it. It doesn’t fully drive the story as there are a bunch of other things going on but it is there and noticeable.

Speaking of love triangle, the leading men in her life…. I like them both but I prefer the second one over the first one. But honestly both wouldn’t be a bad choice.

My biggest issue with this read is that a lot of chapters are a lot of fluff. You really do not notice it until you are caught up and waiting for the next chapter to drop.

But the story flows really well even though the author is clearly stretching it. The artwork with music (because you can play music to your read) is fantastic. Its in color and detailed. I really really enjoyed this comic but kind of wish it would get to the point.

Overall, if you are a sap like me, you should read this.

Webtoon Wednesdays: Assassin Roommate by Monica Gallagher

Released June 5, 2017

A nerdy, introverted gal and an extroverted, former frat guy move into an apartment together after college — it’s a win-win situation for two people who want nothing to do with one another.- Webtoon

I would like to take a moment to thank my little brother for introducing me to this comic.

This comic was unexpectedly amazing and gave me a complete range of emotion from awww, frustration to eye rolling to annoyance and finally to omg. So let’s begin.

Mags is an extremely frustrating character to read. She allows her insecurities to make other people’s decisions as if no one has a mind of their own. She literally does it throughout the entire first season and I swear if someone doesn’t put her in her place, I will be upset because the story is cute and written really well.

Gallagher was able build a really good story and keep me interested. However, do not be fooled by the name. This comic is romance driven and with not a whole lot of action. When the action does happen, it isn’t as explosive as you would want. Mags makes a lot of basic moves that for a while there you don’t understand her hype.
